I tend to be biased towards books that make me cry and even more so towards ones that make me laugh out loud. The Thursday Murder Club did both, so I'm rounding up my 4.5-star rating to 5! Osman does such a great job of completely shocking you, and he does it again and again throughout this novel, especially towards the end. I think my only complaint (which I concede!) is that it gets a little slow to read at some points, and I found that it's really important to absorb everything that happens. It makes sense since it takes a lot of work and exposition to set up such an intricate conclusion, but I wonder if it would have been possible to keep the pace up throughout. That being said, I love the Murder Club itself and the unique voices Osman creates for each of its members, and I echo so many of those critics' reviews in the beginning when I call this book poignant above everything else. These are characters that have lived so long and seen so much, and it's a pleasure to see through their eyes.

I need to stop picking up cutesy books. Really not my vibe. But also- how do you write a murder mystery that I got bored of?

I really enjoyed this story and the characters. The wrap up was a little too easy and I have trouble believing the characters would leave things as they were after the way they handled the previous confession.

The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman, the first instalment in his bestselling cozy crime series, was recommended to me after my recent enjoyment of The Tea Ladies by Amanda Hampson. With book #4 in the series having just hit shelves, it seemed like the perfect time to give it a go!

The story is set in an upscale English retirement village, where four residents, Elizabeth, Joyce, Ibrahim, and Ron, gather every Thursday to engage in the intriguing hobby of examining cold murder cases for amusement. However, when a murder occurs within the peaceful confines of their village, these sprightly octogenarians decide to apply their skills and experience to uncover the killer.

The book lived up to its reputation – it was indeed a fun, light-hearted, and entertaining read. I can see why it’s a number one bestseller. However, it's also understandable why some readers might not enjoy it. The standout element for me was the endearing main characters, who, owing to their age, added a touch of cheekiness that kept me amused. On the downside, the plot had its struggles – the pacing was slow, the crime's resolution felt convoluted and far-fetched, and the abundance of side characters made it challenging to keep track.

Despite these criticisms, the book provided was an enjoyable experience, primarily due to the delightful characters. I'm interested in continuing the series, although not in a massive hurry to do so. I'll likely pick up the next instalment when I'm in need of a light and easy read after binging on dark and creepy thrillers!

Really good story. Wasn’t expecting how it worked out but was nice how connected everything was. It was just a little slow, not keeping me on edge, but that wasn’t a bad thing.

This book is amazing! Such diverse characters and was written in a way that I felt like I was there, or I wanted to be there! I felt connected to the characters and their stories. I didn’t expect to like it so much.
