I really liked that this was an easy read. It's a good book to read when you're in a reading slump. The plot itself is pretty fast-paced, but the romance itself is VERY slow. Now, I honestly liked that there was a lot of buildup to the romance and time spent on developing the friendship of the two characters before their romance. I just wish that we got more of them as an actual couple.
I didn't really like the end. It felt kind of rushed compared to the rest of the book. I thought that the resolution with Penny and her mom wasn't very fulfilling. This was dissapointing since the emotional climax with the characters in Choi's other book, Yolk, was so well executed in my opinion.
I also think that the plot surrounding Sam's character was left very unfishied. There wasn't a satisfying conclusion with his documentary at all. My overall thoughts is that I really liked the beginning and middle of the book, but the third act fell short for me.

I had already read this book once. Like, half of it, so it was originally a DNF. I picked it up again because I saw it on the shelf of the library I was at.

At first, it seemed pretty average, more of a "kind of like it" type book. I wasn't too invested in the characters or what they had going on but as things progressed I liked the characters seperately; Penny as this awkward, despondent, and standoffish shell and Sam as this messy, confused, and bereft guy. I didn't really see the chemistry between them at all, more like them coincidentally being with each other at difficult periods of their lives - until the last few chapters.
I won't bring up the end, because I think it's better to not know it, but that kind of solidified the idea of their weird, makeshift romance. Still not a fan of the age gap, and I think Sam House needs to get his shit together, but ultimately they are cute in an awkward way. So if you like awkward, messy romances, it's a good read.

Plus, imagining Penny in a dress with a jacket over it trying to seem appealing to Sam amuses me.

It was okay. Definitely a read to revisit when you don’t necessarily need anything in particular.
I read in some other reviews that a lot of people don’t like Penny for her personality, but I really like her for all of the same reasons. She’s hypercritical and hypocritical, selfish and protective, romantic but cynical—she judges others for their faults and isn’t very aware of her own. That makes her very human to me.

So cute! I have really enjoyed all of Mary H.K. Choi’s books, she’s one of my favorite authors for sure. This was funny and relatable, I appreciated the mommy issues rep, and had interesting characters. I really enjoyed Penny as a main character, she was prickly and a bit cold at times, but I liked her and found her compelling. I just felt like I would’ve liked some more development into some of the story and Penny’s relationships with Sam, Jude, her mom, etc.

fun read, cute romance with nice supporting characters

but the ending was abrupt!

and the sudden
sexual assault flashback
scene really caught me off guard and felt kind of... sudden?

the first chapter was pretty weak and the inclusion of her first boyfriend felt like his only purpose was to create a chekov's gun moment with
penny's SA trauma

I feel like the concept is a 5, but the execution is a 4ish.
