i love some of her early work but if i'm honest reading this just felt like a joyless struggle.
i picked up and put down this book multiple times, persevering due to some interesting imagery and ideas earlier on (e.g. the house of locks and the time/reality psychedelic experiment) but the further i got, the more it seemed like she enjoyed generating interesting character names more than developing characters or worlds.

It's an interesting collection of short stories. Some of them are a bit more forgettable including the first one but stories like the second in the collection really stand out. There is an overall wonderful cohesion between all the stories.

Minor: Animal cruelty and Body horror

Magical realism as a genre can be a bit of an acquired taste. It takes a lot of trust to allow an author to take you by the hand and drop you in a setting where strange and inexplicable things happen without the rules of a magical system, or indeed any rhyme or reason. Helen Oyeyemi is absolutely deserving of this trust. “What is Not Yours is Not Yours” is a wonderful collection of fairy tale-like stories loosely tied together with the motif of locks and keys which pop up in each story to raise the question, to whom does anything truly belong? This collection is surprising and delightful in bounds - HIGHLY recommend to add some much needed playfulness into your year.
Moderate: Physical abuse
Minor: Animal cruelty, Body horror, Death, Forced institutionalization, and Sexual content
