I read this book when it first came out in 2017 and again in Apr 2024 in anticipation of the new HBO release. When it first came out I was living alone for the first time, a freshman in college, had just broken up with my first love- I had a completely different lens. This most recent read, I think I finally *got* it. A lot of this book is really heavy, but it’s realistic. The ending is
mildly hopeful, but again, so relatable as someone who has lived just enough life to know that it does get better.

i had to take a lot of breaks reading this because some parts regarding the MC’s mental illness were almost too relatable but am i being bold if i say this is his best book?

Jfc
Cried a small.
Green has a supernatural (or maybe natural) to make the most beautiful, life-exploring stories out of tragedy.
Top 10 mental illness narratives (I haven't read thr Bell Jar yet)
Might be my favorite fiction from him, but Alaska is really close.

once again phenomenal. absolutely devastating read. aza’s struggles sometimes so closely parallel my own from when i was her age that i can’t believe she wasn’t based off of me at times. her spiralings on the belief of self are somehow inquisitive and interesting and horrifying and real. john greens writing is like a waterfall, so rich and honest, like a stream of consciousness that’s been composed into elegance.

i was really not sure if i should actually give this 5 stars. objectively the story itself is not a perfect 10/10. but i just loved the book so much and finished it in one day. my heart felt heavy and warm while reading and this book feels so unexpectedly special to me. idk why and idk how to explain what i am feeling.
i already read it in 2019 but basically forgot everything. i just remember really liking it then, too.
i already want to re-read it again, but in english this time.
