I'm not sure what to say about this book, exactly. It's beautiful, it's sad, it's hopeful and bleak at the same time.

Really beautifully imagined community. Equally funny and sad.

I'm normally a pretty big fan of Cormac, but I found this book, while mildly interesting at times, to be extremely dull and very drawn out. I would say his previous books, Child of God and Orchard Keeper were much more my style.

“Do you need a lot of what ya got to survive?”
This will be my favorite McCarthy, until the next. A story of the downtrodden embracing being downtrodden and doing what they can. Dilapidation but not quite despair, just an old-world acceptance that times are brutal. Any given day you may die, get drunk, or simply shuffle along. The novel was rich with small-town going-ons, small tales, rough characters, and hallucinatory imagery. Best author, new favorite.

Suttree should quit while he's ahead.
there is lots of gorgeous writing here, tainted by isms.
