Uuuuuugh. I love me a cult. Pile on some religious crazies and I’m in heaven. But blahhhhh. This was just filled with holes and just strange in a not very clever way. So. Much. Religion. Blah.
Men sen... Nä. Religiösa outback-amerikaner är galna nog som det är, det här blir för galet/äckligt för mig.
Och jag som gillade Stella!

I think the biggest issue this book suffered for me, (and what most made me not rate it higher) was the pacing. The concept and ideas surrounding the plot are very interesting and up my alley for the type of fiction I like to engage with; however, I think the execution could have been stronger. It took a while for me to get drawn in and I think the main reason I completed this book was because I listened in the audiobook format rather than reading it. The characters suffered from a lack of depth early on and gained that depth with the ending which is where I was most drawn in. I did enjoy the telling of the story from two separate periods of time that gradually got closer as more plot was revealed but also think it did lead to some early confusion. Overall, I liked this book when I really hoped I would love it.
First off, this is not well-categorized as a horror. It has a little creepiness to it, but it's more of a dramatic thriller with supernatural elements. But this novel could definitely be described as atmospheric - it's easy to "see" the cove in the Smokey Mountains during the depression era. So the tone and slow, intentional pacing feel at home. There's a very gradual build that doesn't hint at the payoff until more than two thirds of the way through the story. But the author does a good job of keeping the reader guessing and really wanting to know more. You do get the satisfaction of finding out the truth by the end, though some questions (such as where did the "god" come from) are left unanswered.

This had all my favorite things…well-developed characters, the supernatural, pages that practically turned themselves and writing that took me by surprise and made me laugh.
