I love, love LOVE Death Note! It's taken me quite a while to get through the series, what with a lot of stopping and starting. But I can honestly say this is one of my favourite mangas I've ever read!
I adore psychological thrillers, and these books did not disappoint!
Though this series is a 5 star series for me, I do have a few complaints.
I think the biggest one I have is how women were depicted as useless, airheaded, and overall unimportant in the big picture. I loved Misa Amane's character and really disliked how as soon as her and Light meet, she goes from an assumed quick-thinking mastermind as the 2nd Kira to an airheaded, ditzy girl who doesn't at all compare to Light. I feel that we as readers could have gotten a lot more out of her character if she was used as more than just a pawn in the game.
My second complaint is just the HUGE amount of internal dialogue I was reading. While I enjoy reading how the different characters feel and think, these books were often 90% internal dialogue, with not nearly as much actual spoken dialogue.
But, of course, these complaints are overshadowed by the incredible writing, and amazing ideas!
I was absolutely FLOORED by the ending, I really didn't know what the final confrontation would lead to, but when Light loses his cool, collected vibe and starts begging for his life, it was just so wild to read.

okay so i’m aware my reviews for this series have gone steadily downhill from the initial 3 but there has been GOOD REASON. here’s my speedy sum up of some likes and dislikes now the series is all wrapped up:
- misa was WASTED as expected, there was real opportunity there for growth and development and it was non existent
- this obviously leads into the common theme of women (or lack thereof) in these books - literally not a single one is an intelligent, discerning, particularly interesting or individual. big booooo
- near won me over ! i loved his little figurines and his two timing and double crossing. good boy near, L would be proud
- light had a convincing way out ! which didn’t seem possible from the penultimate volume and made the ultimate showdown wayyy more exciting
- lil flashback of baby light talking to ryuk at the end shows how far we’ve sunk into the depths oooOoooOOo
overall, super fun and well worth a read; it’s let down by the prolific sexism. i remember hearing ridiculous amounts about death note when i was a teenager so im glad ive finally come full circle and completed this rite of passage.

• Whenever a god of death who had been in the human world dies the Death Note is left behind and is picked up by a human, that person becomes the owner.
• However, in this case, only the human that can recognize the god of death and its voice is able to see and touch the Death Note.
• It is very unlikely, but if by any chance a god of death picks up the Death Note, that god of death becomes the owner.

I have long adored the Death Note films, well the originals and not the American remake, but I have never got around to reading the books they were based on.

That all changed when I found a set of the Black Edition books in a local charity shop for an unbelievable bargain price. They have now taken pride of place in my manga collection and I will be working my way through the books over the next few weeks.

The premise is iconic, a Death God (Shinigami) recklessly, or perhaps just for laughs, drops his sacred Note Book in the human realm. There it is found by Light Yagami who, once convinced by its legitimacy, decides to rid the world of violent criminals as part of a quest to make a better society.

Following the culmination of the battle between Light and L, with the later being defeated and losing their life, we have jumped forward in time. Kira is now being accepted as the dealer of justice in the world and crime and war has virtually been removed.

Light has taken over from his father and now leads the taskforce chasing Kira, allowing him to play both sides in order to keep his true identity concealed. Unfortunately for Light, there are others still intent on capturing Kira and avenging L's demise. M and N couldn't be more different, one favouring the straight and narrow, the other preferring crime and chaos, but both share the same goal to bring down Kira.

Closing in, Kira believes he has set up everything to come out victorious, but Near has other ideas. Things are thrown into chaos when Mello joins the fray and we quickly arrive at the final confrontation and the end of this epic and wonderful series.

It is everything I had hoped for and so much more. 5 stars.
