one of my favourite series of all time. such a clever and thrilling series that asks so many questions about justice as a concept and the characterisation of light is one of my favourites ever. everyone should read/watch death note at least once it's just brilliant. + ryuk's final monologue >>>>>
Spoiler
“Well, Light, it looks like you've lost. Remember how, in the beginning when we first met, I told you that I'd be the one writing your name in my notebook. That is part of the agreement between a shinigami who brings a notebook to the human world and the first human who picks it up. If they put you in prison, who knows when you'd die, and I don't wanna lie around waiting; so, it's all over. You'll die here. It was good while it lasted. We eased each other's boredom for quite a while. Well, Light, it's been interesting.”Spoiler
The series comes to its end, which is quite different from the anime's. While it lost steam towards the end, it's still a remarkable series.
The star rating is for the entire series. This volume in particular only gets 1 out of 5 Stars. I was excessively disappointed.
They should have ended this series at Vol 6, or halfway through Vol 7. Up till then it was brilliant. But once Near and Mello get involved it goes steadily downhill.
I don’t know how the author went so wrong. By the time I got to Volume 5 (of the Black Edition) it was already becoming repetitive, boring, and ridiculous. The same conversations were had over and over again, and by the time I got to the end, I was literally skimming instead of reading. The ending was stupid beyond belief, and there are no actual moral lessons learned. There was no character growth whatsoever. Everyone was either stupid, a sociopath or a psychopath. It turned into less of a cat and mouse game, and more of a boys ego match. I didn’t like any of the characters, but Near and Mello were both so horrendous that I wound up not caring who died. Even the police were pathetic.
Despite the popularity of the series, I’d say give it a miss. It’s not worth your time or your money.

I really enjoyed the conclusion to this story and watching how far all the characters have come. There was definitely tension throughout the book, which lead up nicely to the big crescendo of the plot. The only thing, is that personal, I don't feel like we needed the one year after part. To me, it made me feel a bit deflated afterwards and lost a bit of that wow factor. Still a highly enjoyable series, that I do recommend.
