American gothic, theatre of the absurd.
This is both good journalism and great writing. Worth the read.

The Undertow is a challenging book to rate. The importance of the topic and some of the revelations captured and conveyed by elements of the pro-gun, QAnon, and mostly white Christian nationalist elements are 5 star important and disturbing. Some of the book’s essays were so nonlinear as to be almost nonsensical at times as though attempts at making it artistic drained the value of the book dipping to 2 stars at moments. This book of essays was therefore inconsistent and overall a 3.75 star read. I still recommend reading for those high value portions which were considerable, chilling, a nd important.
