Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for giving me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Pardon my language here but, I’m sorry, what the fuck was that? The pacing is incredibly slow, the narration of past and present is confusing at best, and the characters are mind-numbingly boring. Delphine is whiny and self-loathing, as if communicating with her friends her true feelings would actually kill her. Lindsey is selfish and childish, vindictive without consequences. And Margaux was so flat that it felt like even the author sometimes forgot the character existed in the book.

What was the twist in this book? That men are terrible? I’m missing how this was supposed to be a surprise to any female reader. I was lost as to what the plot exactly was, in this book. This was a disappointing read. There is no suspense, no thrills, and honestly, not a single twist.

After leaving for over a decade to choreograph in Russia, a former ballerina returns to Paris to rejoin her company as a choreographer. There she hopes everything will go back to how it was with her two best friends when she was at ballet school and part of the company. Things do not. Because they're adults now and have adult concerns that have torn them apart.

It's told in two different timelines, one covering when the three women were kids in the ballet school, and the other current time when Delphine has returned to create an original ballet for her former company. It's implied that something horrific happened that caused Delphine to follow her older boyfriend off to Russia instead of moving forward as a ballerina, but it isn't until the two time lines start converging that you learn exactly what.

Every character is exactly who you think they will be when you say it's a book about three ballerinas, who grew up in an elite ballet school, but have grown apart during their adulthood. They all have a bizarre sense of what's important and have difficulty relating to anyone that isn't in their small world. A lot of this turns into a character-driven soap opera of misunderstandings and Delphine whining about no one understanding her. It's not until the end when something goes from strange to out right wild that I really got invested in the fate of these characters. Unfortunately the novel was nearly over by that point.

You think this book is about one thing, and then there's a plot twist that transforms this book into something else. It's wild and fun and heartbreaking and horrifying all at once. I loved it.
