A quick, thrilling read of the official English translation.

Buntaro is your typical anime emo loner protagonist and gets overwhelmed with his obsession for climbing up dangerous heights. His loner status also leads him to pursuing free solo, which is incredibly dangerous, but addictive to adrenaline junkies. And I absolutely commend this book for highlighting just how dangerous it can be, but the magnetic pull it has on a certain type of person.

"Silent and awkward types yearn for the mountains."

As someone who boulders for a fun hobby, it was silly/ fun to see a heavy stylized sports manga take it SO DEATHLY SERIOUS. If you know any "boulder bros", it's like if we took them seriously. There is a panel that can only be described as an intense Jo-Jo face with the characters going "MANTLING?!", which is objectively hilarious since I've seen like a 40 year old in jeans do it.

When the art was good, it was very good! The character designs are beautiful, especially Buntaro- except when the mangaka phones it in and gives the poor boy the neck of a giraffe.

This was very much a manga for "the boys", the only girl character is 1 dimensional and it's tragic. Why couldn't she climb too? And the intensity was goofy at times, but I think that's to be expected in the genre.

"Down here the world is filthy, but up there the snow purifies all!"

I'll probably read Vol. 2, it's set to come out later this month. I find crazy rock climbers compelling and I'm excited to see Buntaro make his first real attempt.

While the art is incredible, I don’t think I particularly enjoyed how over-dramatic this was. I understand that manga/anime has a certain flare, but the “heroification” of Mori in this way felt really weird. Considering I read a lot of mountaineering books in my spare time and am aware of the risks and also how arrogance can swallow climbers up, I also just kept gritting my teeth any time he went free soloing despite all the warnings. The characters didn’t feel deep either, everyone was very surface and while I was given an explanation on why Mori wanted to be alone, I didn’t believe it. I wanted to feel it more.
