I can't lie...this book got me hyped for my birthday, which isn't even for another 8 months.  The protagonist is so excited for her birthday that she keeps asking how soon it will be, which in turn made me feel like my birthday should be right around the corner as well...right?  I guess the moral of this paragraph is to definitely read this book to your child when it's actually super close to their birthday.

BUT, for the rest of the book...I loved it.  I loved the imagination, the way it included such fun illustrations and counting and the unbridled excitement you feel as a child...It was just so great.  I definitely recommend this book as a pre-birthday gift for your kid.

Aaaaaahhhh!!! I love everything about this book! It’s adorable and funny and perfect for littles! Every child in the world will relate to the excitement and frustration of waiting for their birthday. I love the cadence of the text - I smiled the whole time reading it. And the illustrations are so perfect. I love every little smiling thing and the children of different hues. I am giving this to every small child in my life for their next birthday!

This is a really sweet and happy read! I love the cut-out style art and just how excited each bit of text and picture feels. Would definitely read this with our nieces.

Thanks to Macmillan Kids for the review copy of this book - all opinions are my own.

Okay, so you honestly couldn't have picked a better kid to test this book on! My 5yo is turning 6 in September and since that's the age mentioned in the book, she was in heaven! This is the sweetest book about that all-consuming question preschool and kinders have about this topic! I've already been hearing the question for over a month now at my house! Pre-ordering a copy for my daughter now and also one for my school library to share with 4K and kinder classes!

Thanks to the @kidlitexchange network for the review copy of WHEN’S MY BIRTHDAY? As always, all opinions are my own.

I just loved this picture book and only wish I had it years ago when my kids were smaller. It begins:

“When’s my birthday?
Where’s my birthday?
How many days until my birthday?”

Each page turn features a different child, each asking the same question in a different way. No matter the month, the season, or how distant the date in question, these kids are making plans. They know what kind of cake they want, what the menu will contain, and exactly what gifts will be required.

The spare text is hilarious, absolutely nailing a child’s voice and thought process. The repetition of the word “birthday” throughout makes the book fast-paced and fun to read. I felt like a kid again, reliving the magic of the weeks leading up to my annual big day.

Christian Robinson’s illustrations perfectly complement the text—joyful, childlike, and full of diverse children. Most everyone can see themselves in this book.

WHEN’S MY BIRTHDAY will be a wonderful gift for kids turning 3–6 years old. You may just need to give it to them a few weeks in advance.

I don't know why I think this book is so delightful. Maybe it's the turtle with the little hat.

How fitting that I read this book right after I saw all kinds of photos of people with Christian Robinson at the 2017 AASL conference! There were many hilarious pictures captioned with #notJasonReynolds, because Reynolds was also there. I didn't realize I had one of Johnson's books from the library until I picked this up.

The book probably echoed many of my thoughts. Birthdays, especially the actual day, have always been a big deal in my family. I probably wasn't quite as annoying by constantly asking... but I'm sure I was thinking that!
