It was fine. It was pretty much exactly like the others in the series - run, get into trouble, get out of trouble, fight a monster. I wasn't really into it like I have been with other Brandon Mull books, which makes me think I might be growing out of the genre. I don't know.

It was difficult for me to engage in the first book of this series but each one just gets better. I love the Sci-fi feel of this book and enjoyed the mingling of tech and magic.

Really starting to explore this universe pays this book in spades due to the vibrant kingdom of Zeropolis that’s present here. Having this robotic, technologically advanced setting is so refreshing compared to the prior kingdoms, and the way the shaping is implemented into this is amazing. Cole as a character is also improved, as you start to see his struggles with whether to help Mira or the rest of his friends from Earth. The introduction of Nazeem as this looming force also does a great job of furthering the narrative of this series as a whole.

I read this book for the first time when I was around 14, and I remember being absolutely shocked by the plot twist with Hunter. It was the only thing I could think about for a long time. Very few other books or pieces of media have managed to affect me so profoundly in the way this did, as many years as it has been. I had enjoyed the series up to this point, but it was that part in this book that really made me obsessed. What I wouldn't give to re-read this book with a clean slate and get to experience finding out about Hunter all over again.
Coming back to this series years later as an adult, I found myself eagerly anticipating the reveal I knew was coming. I raced through this book in less than three days. Though I didn't get to experience the surprise at the reveal, I was able to pick up on clues about Hunter throughout the beginning of the book that I wouldn't have been aware of or known to look for on a first-time read, which was enjoyable in its own way. And while I remembered a lot of the major things (characters and general plot) about this series, I had forgotten most of the details. And there are some really cool details. I love the worldbuilding. Zeropolis is my favorite kingdom so far, I don't know if it was my favorite when I first read the series, but the technology and especially the AI is especially intriguing to me now. Super cool. Had a great time reading this.

Probably my least favorite of the series. The hi-tech, sci-fi feel doesn't really mesh with the rest of the worldbuilding, though I liked the ideas around AI and computers taking over. The idea of cars communicating with each other instead of having drivers fills my dreams, but the ID cards having to be checked by hand because "technology is too dangerous" just feels dumb.
I liked the end battle though. It was clever, and made a good use of all the elements that had been set up.

Good book with good action, loved the rest of the series just as much, loved all the fight scenes, especially the last one.
