I love Penny and love the things she is learning. For some of us, it feels safer to withdraw and protect ourselves from all possible harm. It can be very hard to believe that other people like you, that you are in fact likeable, and that other people are trustworthy. These are things I started to learn around Penny's age, and they took much longer than a few months to sink in. I wish I'd had this book at 18. It would have given me hope and encouragement to let down my walls.

Great supportive characters (Celeste!), great epistolary friendship-to-romance, great sad sweet boy.

UPDATE
Looking back on this book now....it was not very memorable, and I didn't have a fun time reading this so it's two-star for me unfortunately...

ORIGINAL
There wasn't anything that made me fall in love with this book. It was an okay book and a good one to read. I take such a long time to read books that I'm not interested in as much. I felt like the plot line was really flat...or just not interesting.
I have problems with the ending the most. I feel like something should've happen before the ending between Sam and Penny before Sam
Spoiler asked Penny out on a date
. I would've love to see more Penny and Celeste content, too.
Not a bad book, but not one that made me scream "I LOVE IT".

Sam and Penny are SOOO FRIGGEN precious, I hate them. for the amount of toxic waste that has been their lifes, they both have such pure hearts. with Sam being so young and going through something too heavy, made my heart melt. BUT his attitude throughout it all was unbelievable and so funny. MzLoLaxO needs to go to MzHeLl, like no stops, bye bye forever. she was awful! I'm 98% sure I hated her more than I disliked his mom ((who was awful)). Jude and Mallory, being polar opposites and so authentic was refreshing. Penny... what to even say. lets just say, she would most definitely be my emergency contact.

I loved this book so much that I was disappointed that it ended!
I immediately noticed a writing style in the same vein as John Green from Ms. Choi, where the reader is given a more realistic perspective and view into the life of two young adults, and I feel the plot of this book will be loved by anyone who enjoyed The Fault in Our Stars. Also, any English/Literature nerd (such as myself) would enjoy Penny's mentions of numerous literary works and fig. language/literary devices.
Emergency Contact is excellent, and the characters are drastically different while also remaining quite dynamic. They're worthy of respect for the way they are written; Choi brings them to life. The imagery is perfect (I could envision Penny and Sam easily, every single time) and the plot moves at a steady pace. Not once did I feel bored; there is always progression at some point. I was so emotionally invested in Sam and his story that I was frustrated "with him" at points.
Plus, look at that cover! I fell in love with its design as soon as I saw it. Whoever designed the characters did a great job--Sam's tattoos are perfectly depicted as they are described in the book!
Overall, this book was a delight to read. I was never bored, and I was impressed with Choi's writing style. Any John Green fan or English class nerd would enjoy the story here. A well-deserved five stars from me!
