Book 14 in the DI Nick Dixon series, and whilst still a good read, it lacked a little in comparison to the previous books.
This book follows three different threads really, though the main focus is on elderly people being killed in their own homes apparently at random, but the other two threads follow a fire at the hotel years before, and the potential abduction of a baby. The threads do start to intertwine but if I’m honest, I found it a little messy and I became confused as to motives and outcomes. The ending attempts to tie everything together but I was still left with a couple of questions which I won’t reveal here as they would be a spoiler!
Saying that, I still enjoyed the book and the cast of characters is always likeable, I just didn’t find it up to the usual 5* standard of previous books. I’ll definitely still read the next in the series though.

From The Ashes by Damien Boyd and narrated by Simon Mattacks is the 14th in the DI Nick Dixon series and I wish I had heard of this series before now as the characters and writing are simply brilliant. Personable, plausible, relatable, characters down to earth, sardonic yet humble
There is a serial killer in Somerset, their victim of choice being elderly and living on their own. Each victim was linked to a school which was the subject of scandal decades previously but is this a tenuous connection or a significant one?
Well paced with an intricately woven storyline that had me absolutely glued to my earbuds start to finish. I am invested in this series and look forward to catching up on the investigations of DCI Dixon
Thank you to NetGalley, Brilliance Publishing | Brilliance Audio, the author Damien Boyd and the narrator Simon Mattacks for this brilliant ALC. My review is left voluntarily and all opinions are my own
