I'm already gonna say this is going to be a favorite of the year. I knew nothing about this book going in, but I absolutely ADORED it. All the characters were fantastic and I could relate to both Claudia and Gideon so hard.
Things this book had that I loved included: the sibling dynamic, all the friend dynamics, displays of affection between guy best friends, Shakespeare, video games, boy bands, and basically everything else. It also made me laugh out loud a good amount of times which is a rare and wonderful thing in a book. The only thing I wish we got a little more of is Gideon's back story. I hope Emma Mills has something else in store because I need more of these beautiful characters.

This book was absolutely adorable and I loved every moment! I loved all the characters and like I have never related to a main character more. Just this book was perfect.
(This is not meant to be a review of the book. It's more akin to a teenager raving and rambling. Which is what it is. I'm probably not even qualified to write a review and I'm just writing this because I need to get my feelings out there. If you do continue past this point, I'm sorry for all the terrible grammar and metaphors.)
I would give it a million stars if I could. I absolutely effing loved it. It was everything I ever dreamed of. It gave me everything I wanted. And I think I'm in love. I'm in love because I wish I could go back in time, wipe my memory clean and read this book again because even though I just read it, I'd read it again.
It was beautiful and it's been so long since I've been this comforted and passionate about a book. Period.
The writing style was flawless. I realize, I don't know much about writing styles to be honest, like I'm just a kid. But I've read a few books and this book just hugged me. I loved the story. It was simple and clean. And lovable. Industry standard. (Yes, I'm being cheesy and quoting the book rather unsuccessfully.)
I loved the main character. And yes, I couldn't relate to her in a lot of ways. But I loved her. I loved Alex and Julia and Zoe.
And I loved Gideon and Noah and Iris. And it was something soft and beautiful.
I know sometimes, I can't relate to the characters and I don't like the book. But it's never because I can't relate to them. Because look at this book. I couldn't really completely relate to the lady who narrates it. Yes, we shared a few fears. But who doesn't. The point being, I still loved the book.
If you ever pick this up and and come across my review and think I'm just trying to sell this book to you, then you're not wrong. I'm not going to get anything out of this. I just want you to read this because maybe it'll make you feel as good as it made me feel.
I'd just really like to thank this booktuber- Booksandlala for saying that this was her favorite book. Because, that piqued my curiosity. Even though I watch her more for the nice and humorous way she talks about books than because I read the kind of books she does. (I'm sorry but I might never pick the thrillers you loved over the years because I'm not really into them. But still.) Thank you so much. Though you'll never read this. I'm grateful. (And yes, I probably sound like one of those weird gen z people. But to be honest, I am one.)

I was very suddenly absolutely CRAVING a quick fun book to read with my eyeballs rather than my ears and this totally satisfied me. This was very fun - its got a fun boyband element, its got a fun Shakespeare Midsummer Night's Dream element, all things Kate is a big fan of,
But.
Guys.
I'm just too damn old for YA contemporary romances and ya'll need to scream at me every time I say I wanna read one. Please stop me from doing this to myself. I CAN'T relate to high school students anymore as an adult with real world problems like wow I don't care about dumb little teenage crushes or friendship drama slakdjslakdjsalkdj please make me stop thinking i wanna read these.
7.29.19 - I’ve seen people hold this up/haul it for so long and only now (from chelseadolling) did I find out this is abOUT BOYBAND FANDOM? AND SHAKESPEARE? YO WTF WHY DID NO ONE TELL ME THIS IS GONNA BE MY SHITTTT

“It's like a snort," I say. "Like a snort chortle. It's a snortle."
"Is that a Pokemon?”
This book was so amazing! Emma Mills is fast becoming one of the best contemporary writes I've ever read! By now, I will pick up absolutely anything any everything she writes.
If you want to read a realistic YA contemporary, focusing primarily on awesome friendships - Claudia and Iris are such a brotp!! - and also family dynamics, try out this book! And then read [b:This Adventure Ends|27779275|This Adventure Ends|Emma Mills|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1455111092s/27779275.jpg|46885088]. Both are as good as the other!
Seriously, there's something about the author's books, her writing, and especially her characters - how realistic and witty and completely loveable and just human they are. There are no high school YA stereotypes, every one of the characters in this book has a certain kind of depth. Even Lena, the girl who could be sorta mistaken for a 'Mean Girl' has shown depth to her. Each and every one of them are so loveabley human.
“Are you ready to put the ‘fun’ in Fall Fun Fest?” he says as I slap his palm.
“I can at least put the ‘trip’ in ‘Triple F.’” A pause. “By being clumsy, I mean. Not by, like, sharing drugs with the group.” Three sets of eyes are on me, and I can’t stop myself from talking. “I don’t have any drugs. In case you were worried. Or, in case you were … expecting me to have drugs.…”
Gideon grins.”
Each Emma Mills book also does include romance, but when it comes to her work, I always focus on something else apart from the - admittedly adorable - romantic aspect of the story.

[b:Foolish Hearts|33275690|Foolish Hearts|Emma Mills|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1487081647s/33275690.jpg|53998283] primarily focuses on all the friendships. Claudia and her long time friend Zoe. But especially Claudia and Iris, and their character development.
The romance also starts out as friendship at first. To be honest, I didn't think I would love the romantic aspect here at first, as much as I ended up doing so. But then Gideon became very dear to my heart after a few chapters in, when I realized he really cares about all of these people around him so freaking much, he was just so open to everyone around him and such a nice, gentle soul in a way I have not encountered too much of in most YA contemporary heroes. And also: I have to say, slightly reminded me of a more flirty version of Gansey from TRC?? So yep, I ended up loving him alsongside the rest of the cast.
Though my ultimate favourite character ever was Iris // alias: a queer girl pretending to be all tough and uncaring and stuff while being an actual cotton candy inside (well sometimes)! Her character development and friendship with Claude was AMAZING.
“All these freaking cast bonding activities,” Iris said when I mentioned it after rehearsal on Wednesday. “I don’t want to bond. I specifically want to not bond. What’s the opposite of bond?”
“Alienate?”
“I want to alienate.”
“Well, you’re pretty good at it.”
“Hey.”
This book aslo focuses on a Midsummer Night’s Dream school play, a roleplay video game and boy band love. One of which I can ehm, not relate to *the boy band stuff* But I immensely enjoyed reading about all of these things anyway!
Overall: I'd highly, highly recommed for you to read this book if you are in the mood for YA contemporary, written in a 100% enjoyable, relatable (and not dense at all) way, and are tired of seeing the focus being only on the romance. Emma Mills books do have amazing romances (my favourite, so far, being the one in here!!), but they have so much more going for them too!
Friendship, as well as family dynamics, are always the most central part to her books! I'd highly rec for you to go check out both [b:Foolish Hearts|33275690|Foolish Hearts|Emma Mills|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1487081647s/33275690.jpg|53998283] and [b:This Adventure Ends|27779275|This Adventure Ends|Emma Mills|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1455111092s/27779275.jpg|46885088]. ...If I had a boyfriend like Gideon I would not be mad.
I actually really liked the characters and story, for the most part. My complaints are minor: 1) some cringeworthy moments, 2) some "I'm too plain to be loved by a guy like that" excuses, and 3) some straight up nasty bullying comments. I was ready to give it a 3/5 stars, but the end really brought me around. I wouldn't say it was unexpected (opposite, actually), but that doesn't mean it wasn't welcome. This was a nice YA read for anyone who likes a good old classic YA romance read.
