Loved this book. It perfectly combines heart-warming moments with laughing out loud. Due to the effective writing, even the weirdest of situations sound plausible. The historical references make for an occasional history lesson as well (as I had to google some of it). These references quickly annoy me, but in this particular book, knowing what they’re about is useful for understaning the text.
Would highly recommend, also to people who don’t read as much!

This story is sooooo crazy! I enjoyed it, but at times found myself doing the 'ya right' as the story unfolded. Interesting to have a book by a Swede kind of making fun of the foolishness of leaders of other countries. I might have been a little generous with 3 stars.
I picked this up (technically downloaded...) as a friend had recommended it. It is a very entertaining read. It took some time to build momentum for me and whilst I enjoyed the dry humour of the early stages of the story I found it easy to put down until I got about a quarter of the way through. From that point on it was a joy.
Allan Karlsson's highly improbable life story is told in flashbacks from within the story of what happens to him after he's climbed out of the window of his nursing home. His simple approach to life (more interested in vodka than world affairs) combined with his pivotal role in key historic events inevitably brings a comparison with Forrest Gump but the story has a freshness in the telling that makes it unique.
The translation must be good because the dry humour comes over well and the book retains a Nordic flavour.
Entertaining and light but a very good read.
