A little precious sometimes, but insightful and uplifting. This book would be an excellent pick-me-up for a bright young person struggling with depression. Houellebecq for optimists.

The Humans by Matt Haig

Synthesizing 'clever' and 'funny' is a tough act in a novel. Too often, what is intended as humourous can land as smug or smarmy. Or, perhaps more often, tiresome and dull. Credit to Haig here, as I found The Humans both smug AND dull.

The whole thing was just so obvious, laborious descended into a sickly sweet tweeness that was clearly intended to be sincere and wry. Perhaps it was my mood, as looking at other reviews here, I am clearly swimming against the current.

Not for me.

⭐ 1/2

This is going to be a short review because I’m still trying to find the words to say about this book.

For the past few weeks I’ve been experience some pretty severe anxiety, and this book truly wrapped the human experience into one of the singularly most beautiful books I’ve ever read, thus forcing my mind into a beautiful perspective and out of my brain.

Don’t get me wrong, this book is sad - gut-wrenching at times, even, with moments of humor, but GOD the tears I shed while reading this book (especially in the last few chapters)??????? Unbelievable…HOWEVER, this book was so beautiful, and so raw, and so real, it was truly a captivating read.

Haig has an incredible way of writing books that speak to the terrible, beautiful, heart-wrenching, amazing human experience. If you’re looking for a book that will romanticize even the most “mundane” life, I suggest this one.

This book is written from an aliens pov and i thought the beginning when he first came to the planet was funny as he was figuring out what it meant to be human. it’s a little slow in spots but for sure a good read

This is a first book I read because of a booktuber (Books with Emily Fox), that I thoroughly enjoyed.

It is fun and light-hearted, and at times, "The Humans" makes you think a bit.

Lovely little read, I managed to finish it in one go and never really lost interest.
