Entertaining book, i think some parts went over my head, it's subtle. very immersive, bring Google. it's somewhat aimless but maybe that's accurate.

I felt a lot of it went quite over my head, although it was interesting.

It took a while for me to get into this, the prose style is (presumably) deliberately old fashioned and the author assumes that you know your 19th century shipping terminology. There is a three page description quite early on of the sails and ropes on the ship, which uses jargon throughout and just meant nothing to me! Get this man an editor! However, as you progress through the book you get used to the style and actually it is genuinely exciting in places. Will definitely read the next book in the series... in a while! 3.5/5

Lots of descriptions of boats. I grabbed my dictionary.
Lots of descriptions of oceans and places near the ocean. I grabbed my atlas.

Good character development. I wonder what will happen next.

I did this on audio, so while some nuance was lost, because of understatement that can turn on a single word. But then again, the reader let me catch nuance (and laugh) that I would have missed if I had been reading. Great fun!

Heavy dense and riveting reading, unlike other things from last century.
