I didn't see the movie when it was popular but I know why y'all was cryin and talking about it for MONTHS

I’m…

….. looking for someone. Just one person.

This is my first ever Manga Read! This fantasy love story revolved around Taki and Mitsuha. Who somehow starts exchanging their body with each other without any intension of doing so. They just get up one morning Taki as Mitsuha and Mitsuha as Taki, and the next day they again switch back together. Its a bit confusing, but the author made it so understandable in these simple lines…

Could this be…?

In my dreams, are this girl and I—

In my dreams, are this boy and I—

—switching bodies?!

Its a cute fluffy, sometimes heartbreaking read about two young people who did everything on their power to be together..

I wanted to stay with her, just a little longer ….

…. I want to be with him, just a little more.

What I liked most about this book is that the dialogues are so simple yet so touching! It made me want to try out more books like this one. And I am open to suggestions!!

Rating:

4.5 out of 5!!

I'm battered by so many different emotions having finished your name. Bittersweet, poignant, serendipitous. These are all words that immediately spring to mind when I think of Kimi no Na wa. Japanese animated films are never just the cutesy stories they appear to be on the surface.
It's a story about believing that there is something, someone, out there waiting and to keep searching, holding on a little longer as Shinkai said in his afterword.
The light novel is a perfect reflection of the film since Shinkai wrote this after having written the film. It feels so much more personal though as Mitsuha and Taki's perspectives are told in first person. Their emotions are their own and not observed, but felt fully by the reader.
The language is lovely, featuring repetition of their thoughts through each other as a way to show their connectedness. I thought the translation was done quite nicely, the text maintaining a form of eloquence.
I'm honestly so glad I picked this up because I adored the film so much. It was by serendipity you could say that I got to watch the film. In Australia, Japanese animated movies don't get a wide release and I was chasing this movie for ages. Event never had the right session times for me and I was sad there were no Vmax showings (there never are). I thought I'd never get to watch it and having not seen it in cinema I'd probably not invest money in a DVD if I didn't know it was good. Then by sheer luck Kimi no Na wa was an inflight film on one of my plane rides to Europe and I fell in love with this gorgeous story.
I haven't stopped thinking about it since, it's probably my all time favourite movie animated film and I cannot wait for the DVD I've preordered because I'm obsessed.
Also, this light novel is GORGEOUS aesthetically. The formatting, the hardback and the feel of it in my hands, that font... I want more light novels like this!

This book did everything: I laughed, I cried, I clutched my heart and I wanted to hug both the author and the translator. What an experience! I was totally unprepared for this.

I liked the idea of Your Name. It is like a time travel/paranormal/magical fantasy blended into one and it's up to you which one you want to choose. I chose the time travel one so I've looked (me being an intellecteual jk) for some "technical" or even not-so technical explanation about the time travel (and body-exchange) phenomena in this book. Sadly, I think I haven't read one? Thus, I've just reflected my dismay on the rating i.e. 3 stars. Lol.

Anyway, I think I just didn't connect with the main characters. Mitsuha and Taki. They read (for me) like characters devoid of emotion especially on the first to middle part. It's just not convincing. Pretentious. I thought I'm reading a journal. Sorry. It was plain bland and flat.

However, they grew on the latter part of the book on the emotion department. So there's that. Also, the narrative is also confusing sometimes.

Nevertheless, as I've said in the beginning I liked the idea of Your Name. Body exchange with a person in the past and all that. It's interesting and unexpected from my part since I have zero idea of what this book is all about. The resolution to conflict is also the reason why I still ended up liking this book. I mean, it gets me to be excited and pushed me to finish the book already.

That is all.

I love this story. The movie is one of my all time favourites. The novelization doesn't quite capture the beauty of the film, but the essence is there. The lack of visuals or the soundtrack is very noticeable and I don't think the writing style does enough to recreate the atmosphere those elements create... but it still reads well.

I enjoyed spending a little extra time in this world.
