Great book! I loved all of it, but to me, there was just a little less action than I'm used to, hence the missing star. Now, a wee little recap: well not a plot, but more characters and stuff. First you need to know that this happens in a alternate UK, but I am not sure when. All people have a daemon, a creature representing their souls. Until adulthood, they can shapeshift, yet after, they remain fixed. The main character is Lyra Belaqua, and her daemon is Pantalaimon. They have to explore the great North to save her friend from the Oblation board, who do unmentionable experiments on children. I shall mention no more...

Updated review: because of Lyra, I added a star.

Fantastic book. I couldn't put it down. Pullman is engaging and intelligent, and this book has many layers. Superficially, it's a great read and a great adventure, but more deeply, the book expresses well-thought out views about religion, physics, love, and philosophy. A must-read for any Harry Potter or LOTR fan or any fan of science fiction, fantasy or children's literature.

I've read this series a few times in my life -- as a child, as a teen, and now as an adult, studying world religion. Every time it has changed the way I look at the world, and been deeply inspiring.
