Read as a part of Mariah-Nate book club, Nate’s favorite as a kid. An excellent adventure story, super fast paced, has a ton going on, very dark, really surprised I read it as young as I did the first time. 5 stars for Lyra and for Ma Costa and Ioryk. -.25 stars because ya girl can’t handle a sad ending.

Such GREAT writing!!!!!! The downside to me was the underlying message throughout what was introduced to me as a book for kids. Learning more about the author it makes sense. Maybe 4/5th grade and up and with someone to help them pick out and discuss propaganda.

I could usually guess what was coming next. It was also a little confusing with all the characters and the different kind of society that they live in.
This book was everything when I was a child, I didn't quite enjoyed it now but when I was younger this book was my first step to fantasy. The creativity of Phillip Pullman for this book is amazing, the book is genius and really well written. I think this is the perfect children book, and definitely one of the books that build my book interest now. I have such an affection for this book.
fantastic. i usually dont give books high ratings but i wanted to break the streak of bad books (so i burnt the last one i had read.) but as soon as i started reading this one i was hooked. i love the characters the plot had me interested and i couldnt figure out what would happen. it wasnt obvious. and i loved how the whole daemon thing wasnt just laid out and explained, but instead you pick up on the ideas of it as you go along (enough to write a paper about!)
