What a strange and wonderful compilation of fantasy - humans attached to daemons, talking animals, armored bears, witches and alternate worlds. Admittedly, I watched the movie first and it follows the book closely enough that some things I already knew, but as I got further into the story, I was exposed to new plot lines and became much more interested. I can see that this, potentially, is leading to a fantastic, expanding story and I am eager to read the next in the series.
Lyra, our heroine, is a young girl who is rebellious and loyal and loving to those who are deserving. She is an innocent but seems to have a basic understanding that people are not automatically trust-worthy, but despite this understanding she is still exposed to some heart-breaking events.
Her adventures take her from a sheltered life in an academic institution to a large, glamorous city to being on the run through forests and rivers and, finally, the frozen, bitter cold of the north. She makes loyal friends, Farder Coram, Roger, Iorek Byrnison who are brave and smart and courageous for the most part and fights against people who are sly and devious, Mrs. Coulter, to name one. But, where does Lord Asriel fit in? Read to find out....

A great kids book that still holds up when read as an adult. It feels like an adult story told from the perspective of a child; there is a lot to be read between the lines here.
I can't believe it took me so long to read this book ... or listen to it via audible. It was a perfect blend of YA, fantasy, action and fun. I adored many of the characters. I look forward to continuing the series.
