I have no idea how I did not read this book in school, but I missed it. It is an interesting story of a girl who is left on the Island of the Blue Dolphins and how she survives. The combination of a strong, resourceful female character and Native American story are fabulous. I think I likely appreciate this story more as an adult than I would have in middle school.

I read this book as a child, but did not realize it was based upon a real-life woman. Re-reading it was wonderful. Scott O’Dell was a master at conveying complicated situations with simple language. I especially loved how he described the passages of time that took place.
