I read this to my sixth grade class. All 26 of them were completely blown away. Incredible experience.
What a beautiful book. I missed out on reading this as a child, but I am so glad I still took the opportunity to read it.

It was as good as I remember!! But I def feel like they should update the school curriculum with a more representative book of native culture.

A childhood fave. As a youngin I loved survival stories and I always remembered Karana and her dog fondly. While I love the story it's important that this is a Historical Fiction novel written by a white man about a native american woman who lived alone on an island for 18 years. The whole story is made up and it is very interesting to me that this book is recommended to all of us as guided reading as children.
Books are meant to be stories but what actually happened to Karana was that after she was "rescued" she died. She died of dysentery. Which she probably would not have fell too if she had not left on that ship.
This story is good, but I think we should recognize that this isn't the story of this woman, but just a historical fanfiction written by Scott O'Dell, probably written from inspiration he had from hearing her story.
