Very interesting introduction and archaeological essay and footnotes to lend context and added knowledge to a book I loved but did not think critically about as a child. Would rec

My daughter was assigned to read this for her 5th grade class, so I'm read it as well. Based on a true story, IoTBD tells the story of a young native American girl who had to overcome amazing odds in order to survive. The book is set on one of the channel islands off the coast of California. The authors describes the flora and fauna of the island in great detail. My daughter is detail oriented, and she loves animals, so these features from the book clicked for her. It was interesting to see the author's imagination about life for native Americans in the early days of Spanish missions--and hunting trips by Aleuts and Russians. I lived in CA for 13 years, so I was interested to learn a bit more about the state's native population.

This was Isaac's book for reading so he read it to me, which is always a nice treat. I loved the details in this book, the history, the beauty of the interconnectedness between land and human and animal, the strong female character, her determination and courage. We were both shaking our heads in wonder at her incredible problem solving skills. A great book on its own and to share with a kiddo.
Now we listened to it in the car on our CA road trip. Again, we all marveled at her ingenuity. Still a great book!

This seemed like a fairly standard survival story. That being said, it was quite well written, and was well worth reading for that reason alone. I did find that my love of survival stories has faded quite a bit, though, and I think that detracted from my enjoyment of the book.
I'd definitely recommend it, but I probably won't read it again myself.
