My mother loved this book as a child. As I read this highly emotional story, I felt more connected to her childhood experiences. It may even be a new favorite of mine.
I never read this in 4th or 5th grade like many children did, but I would have loved it. My favorite stories at that time were survival and wilderness stories: Hatchet, White Fang, Robinson Crusoe. This is very much in that tradition. Gripping, easy read for youngsters, but I'm 26 and very much enjoyed it, as well.

I read this years ago as a child so I don't remember much but I remember loving it, but I also remember that it was sad.
I hate it I hate it I hate!I want to puke all over it and then throw sour milk on it and then flush it down the toilet and then let the sewer rats nibble on it! I. Hate. It.
What I don't like is that it was so boring until she met the girl on the island and was saved.
