This wasn't for me. I found the writing style very detached and the protagonist's choices ranging from baffling to just plain stupid at times. Also, I know this is an issue with my modern sensibilities, but her relationship with animals is screwed up. It made it feel about 70 years more dated than it should be.
There's not a lot to say about this one. It doesn't have any major flaws, it's just simplistic. Instead of being an in-depth imagining of the life of The Lost Woman of San Nicolas, it's a child-friendly highlight reel of the more exciting and interesting things that could have happened to her. I can see why someone might give this to a child to get them interested in history, but I could also see a lot of kids finding this one boring. It was very easy for me to put it down.
If you know a kid that likes slower paced book and you give this to them, I would read the book with them. Even though this is kid-friendly, a lot of upsetting things are touched on such as the slaughter of native peoples and oppressive attitudes towards women.

Yeah, I missed this the first time around, but I enjoyed the escape to a remote island with an intrepid guide. Wonderful story, excellent setting.
