Очікував чогось більшого, тому залишився дещо розчарованим. Світ розроблений і справді детально, але при цьому важко назвати його дуже оригінальним: реальні прототипи різних націй читаються доволі прозоро. Персонажі теж доволі архетипні, включно з головним героєм. Але найслабша частина це однозначно сюжет.
Подорож — це, мабуть, мій найменш улюблений сюжет (вибач, Толкін), а тут персонажі тільки те й роблять, що кудись ідуть, з ними по дорозі щось трапляється, вони долають труднощі та йдуть далі. При цьому написано це настільки незграбно, що сприймається виключно як калейдоскоп випадкових подій, які не мають ніякої емоційної ваги. Навіть смерть окремих персонажів через це не здається вагомою — ну, померли і померли, черговий епізод на дорозі.
Так само дивна тут і робота з сюжетними рушницями. Їх заряджають і розвішують в такій кількості, і настільки явно, що в кінці очікуєш справжній феєрверк. Натомість стріляє в найкращому разі половина з них, решта або дають осічку або взагалі ховаються в мішок для можливого сиквелу.
Ну і, нарешті, недоречні еротичні сцени. Треба, мабуть, якийсь семінар проводити для чоловіків-письменників, де пояснювати, що можна мати у творі романтичну лінію, але при цьому не описувати детально пози, в яких герої займаються сексом.

My favourite read of the year so far by a long shot. A quest-dtoven fantasy adventure with a good dose of humour. Quite dark at times, but not gratuitously grim like so much of modern fantasy. Works well as a standalone, but it seems like the author is also working on a sequel. Highly recommended for fans of Joe Abercrombie and Dungeons and Dragons!

Holy moly was this was an amazing read! Right from the start I was hooked into this world of Kinch and his unexpected quest in a well layered world that I found so interesting. I loved the familiar tropes of fantasy that were turned upside down, built upon and smashed down again. Blending dark humour, bloody violence and high adventure together for a compelling and unique story with characters and scenes I won’t ever forget, especially the whaling moment with vengeful kraken nor when a character is taken by a mob hungry goblins!
I recommend this absolute bonkers journey to fans of Jay Kristoff, Terry Pratchett and Joe Abercrombie

I would have liked more from the plot, but Kinch's voice is second to none - the only way I could describe this is 'The Name of the Wind' by way of Locke Lamora and Gideon Nav. The worldbuilding was exquisite and the ways the characters bounced off one another was divine - the main flaw was that i wanted more from all of it.
