The second part of the "Diogenes Trilogy" finds Pendergast and D'agosta getting themselves into all sorts of trouble. A Sherlock Holmes / Moriarty parallel is apt here, as the two brothers battle intellect to see which one will win out in the end.

Some great thrills here, although very little closure, as is, I suppose, to be expected in the second book of a trilogy. There were a few twists I didn't see coming, and I found the book to be a strong entry in the series (although I think BRIMSTONE and CABINET OF CURIOUSITIES are still better.)

Should be 2.5 stars. I like Pendergrast but I've read too many stories like this. Exciting events, lots of characters, okay Pendergrast is clever and a master of disguise ... but why create another Holmesian character?

The female characters were a written by men who
prefer to develop male characters. Giving a powerful title to a female character isn't good enough when the writers have obvious contempt for women in power. The dinner conversation between Nora and Margo is a classic example - they both sounded like 12 year olds talking about the opposite sex.

That's all.
