A great memoir of a great author! A very insightful read into King's mind and the world of writing. I don't make it a habit of reading memoirs but I loved this one. Definitely recommend.

This was the first book I read by Stephen King and it was an absolute positive surprise! It was interesting and entertaining as an autobiography and very useful as a guide to aspiring writers. I'm going to read all his books.

The only Stephen King book I’ve ever read - and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Half memoir and half writing guide, it made we want to read more and write more (which was the point). His voice really comes through. Highly recommend!

Ich hatte noch nie ein Buch von Stephen King gelesen, da sie alle nicht mein Genre sind. Dann würde mir "Das Leben und das Schreiben" geschenkt. In der ersten Hälfte fand ich weitere Gründe, kein Buch von ihm zu lesen: Es klingt als würde ein alter, weißer amerikanischer Mann versuchen, besserwisserisch aus seinem Leben zu erzählen. Dazu fand ich die Wortwahl sehr holprig und unpassend – womöglich lag das aber auch an der Übersetzung. Erst als es dann endlich um konkrete Tipps zum Schreiben ging, wurde es besser. Die Art, wie er die Tipps gibt, ist mir immer noch sehr unsympathisch. Aber zumindest waren ein paar nützliche Hinweise und Ideen dabei. Dass einige Dinge z. B. zur Agentursuche veraltet sind, dafür kann er nichts. Das Buch ist schließlich über 20 Jahre alt. Man merkt, wie sehr sich die Branche und das Schreiben verändert hat.

“On Writing” was as excellent as everyone says it is. If you’re curious about writing fiction—or are even just curious to learn more about Stephen King’s life and how he crafts his own novels—I highly recommend this book which was both encouraging & useful.
