Jumps the shark too much, I didn't care much for the dynamic between the two main characters and thought that it wasn't very well developed at all. Cool body horror tho

The main story starts out laughably B horror, then midway through becomes unenjoyably gross. The ending could be satisfying if you liked the main characters and rooted for their relationship, but I found them profoundly unlikeable. The use of onomatopoeia is fun though and the art is compelling. The two short stories at the end are fantastic.

I regret reading this before bed. SO MUCH.

Just utterly horrific. You don’t pick up Junji Ito for the lovable characters or the intricate plot (although this is by far the most cohensive story taking place across several volumes that I’ve read of his). You come for the nightmarish art; the batshit supernatural occurrences; the squicky disgusting and deeply unsettling body horror… and boy, does he deliver.

The final short story in the back about the holes on the fault line is genuinely going to give me nightmares. Holy shit.

Genuinely scary. I need to sleep with the light on.

I did not have a good time reading this. A lot of gross body horror involved. And it didn’t seem to have a meaning or perspective at the end the way other Ito books have had. The Fault short story is going to sit with me though—I knew it would but hearing it and reading it with my own eyes are two separate things. The principle post made me snicker because… what??? Also why did every family member immediately crawl into the space???

The idea of fish on robotic legs that are out for blood is absolutely horrifying. Just think about it.

You’re at a beach, having a relaxing day, when all the sudden: you see a fish come out of the water on a pair of spider legs. You think you’re hallucinating when all of the sudden more comes out. You’re shocked, on the verge of panic. When suddenly, in the corner of the eye, you see something. You turn towards the ocean, and see it: a giant white shark on spider legs…and it’s coming out of the ocean and straight towards you—its mouth wide open.

What would you do?

It’s a horrifying situation. And seeing how Japan gets invaded with all these creatures which take on the form of more animals—including that of humans—and how they go on a bloody massacre in Japan is terrifying.

The biggest flaw is the main female lead who, like a lot of Junji Ito’s females, screams a lot and is annoying. Of course, I absolutely recommend this manga. It’s a Junji Ito classic. And if you get the Deluxe Edition, you get two bonus stories!
------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Sad Tale of the Principal Post…which is boring.

And The Enigma of Amigara Fault, which many consider to be one of Junji Ito’s best mini stories. Personally, while I don’t consider it to be his best mini stories—I can think of much better ones that are absolutely terrifying—it’s definitely better than The Principal Post.

While I did like the bonus stories, the highlight is obviously Gyo.
