Influencer Eva Bianchi is due to marry Laurence Heywood, the eldest son of an illustrious family. The venue? A private island on Lake Garda. As the guests assemble for the wedding a blood-curdling scream is heard. What follows is the focus of our story.
Our main focus throughout the story is the girlfriend of one of the Heywood sons. Something of a black sheep, Toby Heywood wants to open a bar but his family think he should go into the family business. His girlfriend, a trained journalist, just wants him to be happy. As the outsider she’s the ideal character to start her own investigation after the body of Eva is discovered.
While the assembled guests wait for the police we get to see how they act, and are offered snippets of info that, once assembled, offer the full picture of how we come to be in this situation.
From start to finish there was little to like about the characters making up this mystery. Inherently selfish and prone to bending the law to suit their own situations it seemed more of a surprise that anyone waited this long to bump one of them off.
While we were drip-fed details that combined to form the bigger picture, little about the way the characters acted made sense. Eva’s murder was the focus for much of the story, but it was transparently a stepping stone to the real story. I’m not sure our author offers enough here to warrant the label - heir to Christie - but it was an entertaining diversion.
