I just really liked this book. It's not incredibly original, but it's a different take on a well loved trope and well loved mythos.
I liked some of the worldbuilding here, though the key relationship is unfortunately rushed - not really given any time to grow or indication of stemming from anything other than two young people saving each other's lives and each thinking the other is hot; this is probably enough for a standard YA audience, but my old jaded heart found the 'romance' too shallow to get me invested in it at all. Many things in this book ring very similar to the Shadowhunters/Mortal Instruments series, so fans of that property will probably enjoy this one as well (a mundane girl - art student no less - with a secret supernatural heritage, unexpectedly thrown into the care of a pair of semi-supernatural siblings belonging to a secret society tasked with keeping order in the whole shadow magical/fae world around the rest of us... yeah), not a lot of new ground in the basic worldbuilding structure, but the plot moves along well enough to keep attention through the story. I do like that the setting is the 1980s (being a child of the 80s myself, it was a nice trip down memory lane to be in a pre-internet pre-cell phone society) and I did think it nice that the protagonists are allowed to be gender non-conforming in a variety of ways which also fit in well with the pop culture of the time.

This book takes way to long to get anywhere. You're half way through before things finally pick up. All the political undertones and cross dressing grate on my nerves.... maybe this should only be a 2 star rating.
