I enjoyed the crafting of the wielders and how they can use different abilities. I also liked that you had chapters from side characters, not just the main cast. It made the world more vivid and interactive.

When LoTR was made into movies and even more so since the GoT tv series, a new genre of fantasy have become more and more common.

I call this genre "Please buy the movierights". I'm talking about books that read like a screenplay more then a novel.

You can usually recognize these books by asking a simple question: "How much would I need to cut/change to make this into a movie?", if the answer is "not a lot" then you should know what I'm talking about.

The reason I think this is a problem is that a book isn't supposed to be just a written movie, the strength of books are the depth and dialog you just can't compress into a few hours.

What you end up with is a book like "The White Tower" where the dialog is either a) over the top exposition or b) "witty" banter.

I could rage alot more about this but honestly I just want to forget this book so if it ends up a movie I might be able to enjoy that.

There is really nothing wrong with The White Tower, there really isn't anything right with it either. It is your typical, generic fantasy story filled with clichéd characters doing basic tropey things. The world building was nonexistent, the characters flat, the plot was formulaic, and the writing basic. This just wasn't for me.

Honestly, I really like the premise of this book. It had a lot of potential, but ultimately, I don’t think this “story” should have been a whole book. It sure condensed and added to another one of the books in the series.

It’s like when you watch a soap opera and you like the story and the characters but you watch every day for a week and then realize that the plot didn’t really advance.

For instance
one character is imprisoned in a tower and being tortured throughout the whole book. At the end, he escapes. To me there could have been one or two chapters about his torture and then he gets out and the actual story begins.  The other characters POVs are the same.

Now I know why there were so many POVs 😭 so many people had to die.
But ne'er fear, hope persists in the end...if you can remember it.

Decent

Fairly predictable and not super original, but not bad over all. I would recommend this to someone looking for an entry in the fantasy genre.
