oh my god as soon as i started reading it i was like "oh no this guy is exactly like the one from this side of paradise", actually i think anthony was even more unbearable lmao (though i was amused when fitzgerald referenced this side of paradise, i love when people reference their own work)
but yeah, god, like you can sympathize for the characters sometimes and i know it's supposed to be this way, but the fact that they haven't learned anything by the end and they just get their millions after doing nothing when they very well could have for SEVERAL years, it was just so frustrating
anyway, i remember loving gatsby so i'm hoping i still do because these first two books did not do it for me with characters i could not find anything to like about

Two young, immature, wealthy and unemployed people living in the Jazz Era of excess get married. The drink a lot and party hard because YOLO!

They start to run out of money and lose an inheritance. They realize they are pretty shallow people in a shallow marriage and are not able to cope and do what is necessary to get by, you know, like keep a job. Money saves them... The end.
The redeeming quality of this book is that the writing quality is exceptional but the characters are of an unrelatable timeframe. In summary, while the novel is not what I would call timeless, Fitzgerald is not untalented. Still worth reading? Yes, if you need a literary historical window into the Jazz Era, Fitzgerald's works are the way to go.

I cannot express with well-articulated words how much I enjoyed this novel. It's beautiful and poetic and sad and desperate. Fitzgerald is a master of words and I would quite literally have to sit and absorb certain passages for a few minutes in stunned silence. My new favorite read. Highly recommended.
I think I'm going to need to read some commentary/critique on this to more fully understand the themes/allusions. Such a haunting picture of the problems with excess/ focus on material wealth.

I am convinced that this book portrays the great grandparents of most of the people my St a Lawrence friends and I went to school with.
