3.56 AVERAGE

Fitzgerald writes two things exceptionally well: the state of being absolutely lights-out drunk, and an utter disaster of a relationship between two utter disasters of people, which means that this is a book that plays right to his strengths. Reading this had the same sort of allure as watching a train wreck, and I mean that as a compliment, as this was surely intended.

I don’t think it’s perfect, though; some aspects are navigated a bit clumsily or without much impression. But the book raised in my esteem as it went on, and it’s probably a 3.5 at worst. If this is one of his lesser novels, I look forward to exploring more of his works.

The Great Gatsby is one of my favorite books of all time, so I was bummed that the first half of the book moved slowly for me. Anthony and Gloria partying it up over and over...basically behaving in a shallow and boring manner. Then Anthony gets disinherited after his Prohibitionist grandfather stumbles into a rager at Anthony’s house, and all hell breaks loose. Anthony and Gloria both spiral out of control and are miserable. The whole dive only highlights what morally pathetic people they are. I thought the ending *spoiler alert* was perfect. In a last ditch (and surprisingly successful) effort to reclaim the lost inheritance, Anthony is waiting for the Court of Appeals to hand down a decision—by the time they do though, he has had a complete break with reality. Perfect.

I love the style that FSF writes in. It’s whimsical and descriptively vague leaving room for humanity to project into interpretations. This book left me eager to commune with other readers over their interpretations and understandings, especially of the ending.
