Rare is it to read a book that truly understands what an eternal optimist is, while Abernathy is naive at times, he is also deeply aware of the situation he is in and perseveres regardless. He leads with his heart and knows what he wants, just not always right then and there. This was an OUTSTANDING read as a debut and an immediate favourite.

This descending from a book to a project. At first I was intrigued by the premise and the interesting narrative style. Quickly, I got bored of the prose and started to find it grating (which is perhaps the point, and call me a traditionalist, but real ones will know that never works for me). By the end, it wasn’t a story so much as a prop used for the author to talk about late stage capitalism and student loan debt. Which are important issues but also there’s only so much a girl can take. I just wish the allegory was a little more complex or less one to one or something, but the narrative leaves you no room to breathe or interpret.

this book is really well written. the descriptions are well done and very visual, but Jonathan Abernathy is an idiot and not in a likable way and it made this book hard to finish. it was an interesting concept and there were parts of it that were really good, but never really resolved in a meaningful way because Jonathan Abernathy couldn't be bothered to look further into things.

One of the best books I read in 2023. Completely unique, relatable characters, intense and interesting atmosphere and plot. This book will stick with you.
