I read this book in junior high school. It convinced me that I wanted to be computer programmer and go to MIT.

Well, I didn't think I would enjoy this book as much as I did. Thought I'd read it to level up my background knowledge on cyber-ish things but ended up loving learning about the history of how so many characters influenced what we have as computers today. Fully nerdy but def interesting!

"If hackers are born, then they're going to get made, and if they're made into it, they were born - Ricky Greenblatt. ( Ricky of course admitted that he was born a hacker)

In the age of cyber warfare, I personally believe everyone should read this book. However I realize this isn't everyone's cup of tea so it will most likely appeal to those in the profession and geeky types like me who find the whole field of hacking fascinating; in that case, you won't be disappointed. This book serves up rich history, personalities and confirms/debunks myths. I highly recommend.

The writing is excellent considering the topic and terms are foreign to the average reader. Levy is a good storyteller and weaves timelines and people efficiently along.

All in all well done.

I do hope Levy is planning a second book showcasing the cyber battlefield and the heros and villains of current times?

First published in 1984, still interesting to read.

Интересно, полезно, но излишне затянуто - можно было сделать вдвое короче, читалось бы лучше. И любительский перевод на русский очень так себе.

Steven Levy, old-school hackers, early computers: a salacious love triangle.

Good content but I already knew most of it, being a tech quizzer. The pace was very slow, and I could not stick to the content long enough.
