The story’s mix of past and present keeps things interesting, though the timelines can be a bit tricky to follow and the pace feels slow at times because of the format.
It honestly shows how harsh life was in the South back then, with racism and injustice woven into everyday moments. It’s chilling but important to see.
Amid all that, the friendship and love between Ruth and Idgie shine through, accepted by those around them in a way that feels hopeful, even if a bit idealized, given that even today, 100 years later, hatred towards LGBTQ+ community is still dangerous and very real.

I loved the characters of this book. They were all too real for me. This was a fantasy of sorts because it is about a small town in which people truly love and care for one another. They enjoy each other's company, look out for each other, and want the best. In a different timeline we have Evelyn Couch who is on the verge of suicide from the disappointment of modern-day life. The friendship she forms with Mrs. Threadgood revitalizes her life. This book does an excellent job of highlighting the importance of multigenerational relationships. I appreciated the relationships of the book most of all. I give this a four out of five stars due to an incredible amount of racist language that I found to be unnecessary.
