Loved the movie and wanted to read the book for the queer representation. It's a much more complicated and nuanced story than the movie portrays. Goes a lot more into the lives of other characters and the differences they face due to race and status. Definitely hard to read some parts that were racist and outdated and just sometimes had me going, huh? But a fascinating read that I cant wait to discuss with my book club.

The movie has always had a special place in my heart so reading this book I was pleased and also a little bored. Loved the extra details on Ruth and Idgie but didn’t care a ton for the extra characters stories and the newspaper bits. Though I will admit as the book went on I minded it less and less.

new all-time favorite.

An intricately woven tale that is one part murder mystery and one part heartwarming. Loved the rural setting and how Flagg tackles racial, sexual and gender prejudices. There were times it felt like a more grown-up version of To Kill A Mockingbird, but not overly so.

One clever but frustrating aspect of this book is the frequent switching between time periods, protagonists, and locations. The only real constant we have is Ninny Threadegoode talking to Evelyn Couch at the nursing home, filling her in on jumbled bits and pieces of her life and those that she knew in Whistle Stop. While the story is coherent and events are explained in time -- with the special help of Dot Weems' insight and summaries in newspaper clippings -- I spent much of this novel wondering what the main plotline was, who the real main characters were, and what major conflict I should be thinking about. By its end, I wanted to rip all the pages out, rearrange them by date, and reread the book in proper chronological order.

That's when I knew it was a great book.

<
Spoiler> Note: As for the murder mystery bit, it seems really original and clever at first until you realize that Lamb to the Slaughter did the same thing three and a half decades earlier! <

Це книжка, яка несподівано стала однією з моїх найкращих у році. Це не просто роман про кафе в маленькому містечку. Це історія про жіночу силу, вибір і свободу бути собою навіть тоді, коли світ проти.
