Admittedly, this story took me a while to get into. I was afraid that I wouldn’t like this book that everyone claims to love so much but about halfway through I finally understood all the hype around this story.

I originally wanted to read ‘Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe’ because I had seen the film and enjoyed it. I was ready to read about Idgie and Ruth and I wasn’t disappointed. However, coming into this book I hadn’t expected such rich and vivid storytelling. Fannie Flagg makes Whistle Stop seem like a real place, along with the large and vibrant cast of characters that fill the small town. Even after finishing this novel, I feel like I have to remind myself that this isn’t a real place and these aren’t real people and yet, I still found myself tearing up at the end.

So, long story short, I understand the hype that this book gets.

When the smart hot girl tells you a book was formative to her, you really hope it doesn't disappoint you. Glad to report that Fried Green Tomatoes did not distort my view of her... though maybe it made her hotter???
Regardless, this book was great. Witty, emotional, and filled with down-to-earth small-town goodness.
