This is a varied collection of stories & essays. Anne Frank shows a good understanding of human nature given that this work was written when she was no more than 15 years old, & writes in an engaging way. Her essay, 'Give', is an interesting, albeit short, reflection on wealth & poverty, & status & the lack of it, & is a plea to give to the poor (or beggars as Anne calls them). And her sentence from it on p.138 encapsulates my feeling at the moment:

'Why should one be nicer to a rich woman than to a poor one?'

Part 1 of this book, “Fables and Short Stories,” comprises the fiction that Anne Frank refers to numerous times in her diary. While some have kept in mind that these fictions were written by a teenager, they stand on their own as solid works of fiction, even without the astounding historical context. Frank takes on a surrealistic tone similar to that of Leonora Carrington in some stories, and I found them thoroughly enjoyable to read through. Each story packs a lot into just a few pages, but contain moments of wisdom beyond the author’s years. My favorite was “Eve’s Dream,” but the beginning of her unfinished novel Cady’s Life has some really strong ideas too. The second part of the book was entitled “Personal Reminisces and Essays” and I feel would have been more effective if edited into her Diary. These are mostly autobiographical, but I suppose the distinction is that they describe a period of time before she started writing the diary?

Anne Frank was an incredibly writer. She was very young and you can still see her writing was a bit childish sometimes, but this book shows that if she could've lived longer, she would've become a very famous and talented writer.
My favourite parts of this book were her inner thoughts and daydreams, followed by her incomplete novel. Her short stories were pretty good too, but some of them were too "fable" like for my own taste.
Nevertheless, it was a great book and I'm really glad I bought it when I visited Anne Frank's house/museum! :)

It was wonderful revisiting Anne Frank's writing. I've been meaning to read this since I read her diary in 2020. She was such an intelligent and introspective young woman. Reading fictional works by her gives even more insight into her mind. The fact that her novel goes unfinished serves as a good reminder of her fate. We are blessed to be able to read what she did complete along with her other short stories. A great addition to The Diary of a Young Girl!

It’s been too long since I’ve read The Diary of Anne Frank to remember which of these story snippets and memoir scraps may have been included. However, I didn’t remember reading most of this, even though parts were vaguely familiar.

Anne Frank’s shorts are an interesting glimpse into her longings and her spirit. Certainly worth a read. However, I do have to rate this book lower because this edition has some major flaws. The unforgivable one being that one section is a mixture of memoir and short fiction, without any indication which is which – and many of her fiction pieces were wrote as if they were memoirs. It often becomes clear through context. For example – in one story, the first paragraph reveals that the narrator is 17, and Anne Frank didn’t live to see 16. So that one is fairly obvious, but some of them are fairly ambiguous until you get ½ way through.

So, basically it’s worth reading if your copy doesn’t include any of her short stories, or the memoir pages that were found separately, after the first publication of the diary. However, later publications may include these, so I’d do your own research.
