Some real noire-y noire set in the Istanbul of old where everyone's a terrorist and a coup planner and all of that. Really atmospheric, particularly for Pamuk.

Have you ever had someone talking to you and the whole time you’re just thinking “what are you even talking about rn”? That’s how I felt the whole time reading this. And with it being so long winding, I was going to dnf when I saw that my library had the audiobook. Unfortunately even with the audiobook it wasn’t any easier to digest.

This is the sort of novel where the plot isn’t important, not so much as the journey Orhan Pamuk takes you which is filled to the brim with tangents and philosophical musings. I cannot say I understood much of this novel and unfortunately I think this type of story isn’t meant for me. This was very difficult for me to get through and I often found myself losing focus.

Magnifique roman. Long, dense, mystérieux. Comme dans tous les romans de Pamuk, l'écriture est sublime. L'alternance entre récit narratif et chroniques de quotidien est bien exploitée. Et encore une fois, on a le goût de visiter Istanbul!

Hard book indeed. It's a good book, but I guess you have to understand Turkish to fully appreciate. He goes into long streams of consciousness parts that are hard to swallow. To be fair, I do think it has more to do with the Turkish language than the author itself. That said, the book is a fascinating view of Istambul and Turkey in the 80s. Plenty of historic references and a very interesting perspective on the Turkish people during that decade. Worth reading, mostly to get a sense of Turkish literature but do take it with calm as it's a hard read. Don't expect the typical narrative, but a much slower plot rhythm.
