Ok. Good book. But didn’t wow me the way that ACOMAF did. I loved how it started, I live for the scheming and court drama. And I think the book had great pacing and overall the plot was gripping. But… at the end it just felt a bit shallow. Nothing was really gained or lost.
Everyone lives (miraculously) except the father you don’t really care about. All of these sort of random events conspire for the good guys to come out on top.
The Tamlin subplot was logical and emotionally interesting but wasn’t really explored. My other beef with this book is that
the revelation that Mor is gay
felt forced. Can’t she just..
not love him like he loves her? Why does she have to “prefer” females?
. Don’t get me wrong I love a
gay character to add to my representation roster
but it just felt like something Sarah J Maas came up with and then forced to happen, not something natural for the plot/characters. Overall, an enjoyable book worth reading. However, book 2 felt much more natural and realistic than this one.

Not as good as ACOMAF - I feel like the war at the end is a bit rushed and hurried considering how many characters were involved. If it was split into two books so that the final third could be more flushed out then it would’ve been much better. But I appreciate the continued character development, I thought that the first part in the spring court was very interesting, as well as the development of characters such as Elain, Bryaxes & the other death gods and Amren. Azriel & Mor also shone in this book. Feyre’s character continued to grow (although I think it’s weird that she didn’t fight much at all? I know she had other things to do… but all of that power. Rhys was also a continued ledge, but didn’t have as much page time as expected as the book went on.

I would've liked to hear more about the different courts and their own magic/practices as well as about the beast forms of the High Lords. I also really liked the idea of this book being more class driven like with Feyre’s scheming at the beginning, but because the war was so huge it became impossible to make that a really integral part of the story. C’est la vie!

The plot wraps up really nicely, so it’s a great general closure to this light escapist fantasy series. Intrigued to see where the next two books take us.

2024 reread:

Rating: 5/5 stars

This will never be my favorite of the series but it has some truly ICONIC moments and I thoroughly enjoyed the reread!

Original review (December 2022):

Rating: 5 stars

Feyre and the Night Court must create alliances and battle ancient magic to save Prythian.

As the third book in the series, there isn’t a ton I can say without a lot of recap and spoiling, so I’ll keep it short. This one was a tad long for me and didn’t have the impeccable sexual tension of ACOMAF, but it was nonetheless an absolutely phenomenal roller coaster ride the whole way.

CW: Blood/death/war/grief; kidnapping; misogyny/sexism; torture/violence; sexual assault; domestic violence/physical violence
