Wow, I haven't read anything this dark and gritty in a while. From the get go this book locks it jaws on you and won't let go. Even if you want to put it down you can't, it's gripping and haunting and you have to find out what in the world is going on!

The story is told through a variety of narrators; a police detective, her teenaged daughter, an out on his luck writer, the sadistic killer, and a homeless man. All their personal versions of events make the story somehow more horrific as they come to terms with the horrors they are encountering. The story opens with the discovery of a dead child in Detroit, more specifically, half of a dead child, his other half has been replaced with half of a deer. From their the story gets more twisted, as the cops try to solve the case more "bodies" keep turning up. It seems as if the killer is trying to make his mark by leaving his weird pieces of dead body art around Detroit for people to "admire."

Dark and absorbing, this book will keep you captivated and you may find yourself sleeping with the lights on.

The characters are believable but I didn't connect to them emotionally. I'm not really into sci/fi, so this book was a bit of a bummer for me because I was hoping for a more realistic mystery. It was a good book until the dream stuff became more prominent.

A good book, in my opinion, but not the stand out I was expecting from other reviews. Interesting but I didn't feel much tension as much of the foreshadowing actually revealed plot points much to easily. Though it was a short book it still felt as if the story wandered about needlessly.

So great to find a book that I couldn't put down. Reminded me a lot of True Detective and all the really excellent BBC police procedurals. Best use of social media in a novel that didn't seem gratuitous or cheesy. Excellently creepy supernatural twists.

I am surprised I picked up a horror book. I only did it though as it's by Lauren Beukes and I trust her I guess. It was scary and creepy, and at several times I had to put the book down for a while. But it is really well written, and Gabi and Layla are interesting people, and creepily the killer is also someone we follow, and the bad guys (even the really, really bad guys) seem to have glimpses of humanity. The major and minor plot lines weave in anxiety and funny, satirical moments and it was absorbing.
