Washington State's Poet Laureate writes poems which cause one to stop and reflect on relationships that are very exploitative ("When You Are Blue") and while she made observations from life ("The Rental Dog") Most left me feeling worried. Why do women allow themselves to be treated that way? Then the answer comes in another poem "Nail Salon" where the poet is trying to pick a color of red polish to match her mood, one that says "This Predatory, Capitalist, Patriarchy is Killing Me and I'm Trying to Learn to Like it" Red. Several poems spoke straight to my psyche and are worthy of a second or third reading.
