I need to get around to re-read this because it's just one of those books that stuck with me regardless of what I was going through. It has a presence like it silently stares at me in the back of my head. A world-view-changing Novella, but that only if you relate to the situation and ideology that Noboru or Ryuji present.

A dark book about a child's aspirations and priorities, and what happens when they interact with the reality of people and adults that don't understand them. The book has some dark twists, but a lot of it was sort of a pleasant read. Not overly ideological, which is something I was concerned about.

One of Mishima’s shortest novels, but that doesn’t mean it’s less loaded than others. The writer touches on nationalism, post-war childhood, and how this connects to the corruption or salvation of the soul. This book is a great option to start with this author as it completely embodies Mishima’s unique perspective on the world.
