An action-forward, near-future romp that paints an interesting picture of neuro-connectivity. Though preachy at times, this is an interesting pro-technology narrative that reads like an action movie.
A pretty quick read, Nexus offers a contemplative perspective on what it could mean for humans and computers to be connected as one communal organism. Exploring the hopeful and the ugly side of futurism, this is a great book for a thoughtful Saturday afternoon.

Nexus is an excellent thriller, but little more than that. The characters are props for the plot, and the plot is a prop for Naam's obviously biased perspective on human enhancement through nano tech. The book is preachy and heavy-handed too often, though the action is first-rate. Though Naam claims the tech is based in reality, I found the sheer variety and evolutions of the tech to be a bit light in terms of explanation. Don't expect Neal Stephenson's level of exposition here. Entertaining, but lacking real resonance.

While the brain operating system premise is very interesting (so interesting as to fuel a 30 minute conversation at a work team lunch that barely scratched the surface) and the plot moves at an action-packed clip, the writing here isn't good enough to get me past three stars.
* Characters manage to be flat even with elaborate back stories.
* Prose gets pretty jerky and awkward in places.
* Action scenes wish they were in a screenplay (lots of excessive explosions and gunfire).
* Debugging or coding descriptions have an odd pacing to them that doesn't match with how I've seen anyone work with code.
That all being said, I already started the second book in the trilogy.

The first half of this book I would probably rate 4 stars. I really liked the premise and set up and was excited to see where the story went. The second half though... It was just way too much action for my tastes. It was really hard to keep my focus while listening to hour after hour of fight scenes in the end of the audiobook, and I lost all interest in the story and characters by the time it was over.
If you're into super action packed sci-fi type stuff, you'll probably love this. For me though, it was just ok overall.

Characters just feel a bit flat? When something bad happens I don't have much of an emotional reaction because I feel I don't know then well. Maybe it's just too fast paced and I'm used to deep and complex character development of epic fantasies like wheel of time.

Wow, the very idea behind this book is amazing & mind-blowing. I love, LOVE the idea! It starts off a little slow, but trust me on this - stick with it! Wow, so good, has characters that I could relate to & enjoy. Not perfect, they are flawed even though they are "post-humans" - no Gary Stu or Mary Sue in the bunch. I've already started the next one in the series. Can't wait to see where it's going!

Fantastic ideas abound. This feels like a modern update of Snow Crash with the VR swapped for a neural interface. The Nexus series manages to be thought provoking and have great action/thriller elements at the same time. I highly recommend checking it out

The action set pieces are spectacular. The writing relies on tried and true troupes and stereotypes but results in a briskly paced plot with characters that I cared for.
Just reading about some of the possibilities with neuro-nano-technology is a treat in itself. I'd say this is only for fans of science fiction and not a broader audience.
