Love a good book of short stories/essays. Many of these still ring true in 2024.
Bryson is witty and funny and his writing style is very easy to read. The sarcastic undertones in his book are my favorite and everything he says is spot on, even if it was written in the 1990s.
I'm not exaggerating when I say that listening to Bill Bryson while I endure an awful commute is like having laughing gas while getting a root canal.
It was funny, would make a great audio book. Not as funny as the other Bryson I've read, though.
Reading this in 2024 is like opening an odd time capsule from the late 1990s.
This book turned out to be unintentionally funny mostly because it is so outdated when it comes to technology that you can’t help but laugh at some of the comments.
There are some genuinely very funny bits in the book, particularly when he talks about his mishaps and misadventures, but it’s mostly a series of ruminations on what America is and how it’s changed from when the author was a child.
Bryson’s comments and insights work great in the format the book is written. You can read a few 4 page articles that will likely get a chuckle out of you and then forget about the book until you have a couple free minutes.

I am usually a fan of Bryson, but because of the nature of the collection, this felt disjointed.
